Understanding Residential Treatment

While some mental health conditions and addictions can be treated through outpatient resources, sometimes it is helpful to take a more intensive approach to treatment. Depending on your own mental health needs or personal goals, you may be interested in residential treatment. Acadia Healthcare offers a host of options for residential treatment that provide our patients with specialized, long-term care.

Why Consider Residential Treatment

Residential treatment, one of the high-quality levels of care offered by numerous Acadia Healthcare treatment centers, has helped countless individuals in their pursuit of happier, healthier, and more satisfying lives. Our residential treatment programs are designed to treat people of all ages who are experiencing a wide range of mental health and substance use concerns. Our dedicated, expertly trained staff members are equipped to offer clinically excellent care and provide the support, guidance, and interventions necessary for residents to reach their treatment goals.

The following is a list of some of the various treatment modalities implemented within our residential treatment programs:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)
  • 12-Step philosophy

Types of Residential Treatment Offered Through the Acadia Network

In order to meet the unique needs of those who require residential treatment, Acadia is proud to offer various types of residential care within its network of treatment providers:

Residential treatment for chemical dependency, substance abuse, and co-occurring mental health conditions: For those who are suffering from an addiction, Acadia owns and operates numerous treatment centers with residential care for all genders and ages. Residential treatment for addictions or co-occurring disorders includes various interventions designed to foster healing and make addiction recovery more sustainable. The staff at our addiction residential treatment centers is comprised of addiction specialists who understand the unique needs of our residents. These specialists are available 24 hours a day to provide support, encouragement, and guidance for residents on the road to sobriety.

Psychiatric residential treatment: When an individual’s mental health treatment needs exceed the resources of an inpatient facility, residential treatment is often a helpful solution. Our network of psychiatric residential treatment centers offers care to people of all ages. Psychiatric residential treatment allows individuals to step away from the stressors and triggers of everyday life and focus solely on their emotional wholeness and mental well-being. Included in psychiatric residential treatment is 24-hour support and a variety of interventions that have proved effective in decreasing the severity of mental health symptoms. In psychiatric residential treatment, residents learn how to manage mental health symptoms, are taught various coping skills, and can develop the confidence needed to build a healthier life.

Specialty residential treatment: In addition to addiction- and mental health-focused residential treatment options, numerous residential treatment centers offer specialized programs for individuals whose needs require a greater level of expertise. Some residential centers are focused on treating certain concerns or populations. For example, some of our residential centers specialize in eating disorders, while others offer treatment just to adolescents. Our specialized residential programming includes the following:

  • Eating disorders
  • Weight loss concerns
  • Gender-specific treatment
  • Mental health or addiction-related concerns with co-occurring chronic pain conditions
  • Trauma-related concerns
  • Process addictions
  • Adventure therapy for adults

Methods of Care Offered Through Acadia Healthcare

Our residential treatment centers only use research-based, clinically proven methods of care. The following interventions are frequently featured in residential treatment and may be included in a patient’s personalized treatment plan:

Detoxification services: When an individual who enters treatment also suffers from chemical dependency, detoxification, or detox, services may be included in their care. Beginning treatment with detoxification services can give the resident the clarity of mind and attention needed to focus on all aspects of recovery. A resident’s detox period is facilitated under the supervision of medical professionals who can help make the withdrawal process more comfortable.

Medication management services: Sometimes a mental health condition cannot be treated with therapy alone. In such circumstances, certain psychotropic medications may be recommended and prescribed during a patient’s time in residential care. Many of our residential programs feature on-site psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and nurses who are dedicated to monitoring each patient’s progress while on medication.

Medical care: Patients who are suffering from certain conditions such as eating disorders or chronic pain conditions may require medical attention in order to focus on other aspects of their recovery. Within certain residential programs, namely Acadia’s specialized residential treatment centers, on-site medical care is incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan. The supplemental medical care enables the patient to focus on their treatment goals while also receiving the physical care they need for a healthier lifestyle.

Individual therapy: As a means of providing patients with the individual attention they deserve, residential treatment centers often offer individual therapy sessions. Individual therapy can be a life-changing asset to a person’s treatment. These sessions can serve as a time for patients to process their experiences, feelings, and emotions with a qualified professional who offers guidance and support.

Group therapy: Group therapy can be a beneficial part of an individual’s treatment plan. Led by one or more qualified staff members, group therapy sessions provide opportunities for patients who may be experiencing similar challenges to support and learn from one another. Group therapy also serves as an excellent forum for patients to discuss topics related to healing and recovery.

Experiential therapy: Acadia Healthcare is dedicated to holistic recovery. Through experiential therapy options, patients can explore the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Experiential therapy opportunities can include programs such as art therapy, recreational therapy, yoga, exercise opportunities, and meditation.

Family therapy and family support programs: Acadia is dedicated not only to helping individuals heal, but also to helping the families of patients achieve health and wholeness. An individual’s mental or behavioral health challenges rarely affect them alone; they also impact their family. Family therapy sessions give patients and their family members opportunities to discuss the ways in which mental illness, behavioral problems, and/or substance use have affected their family unit. Family therapy sessions and support programs can also help family members to better understand what their loved one is going through and learn how to best support them throughout their time in treatment.

Specialized treatment tracks: Many of Acadia’s residential treatment centers offer specialized tracks to meet residents’ unique needs. Often focused on a particular concern or population, these treatment tracks can be implemented into a patient’s current treatment plan, offering a therapeutic process that is both comprehensive and effective. The following are some examples of specialty treatment tracks featured within Acadia’s residential care:

  • Opioid addiction treatment
  • Gender-specific treatment
  • Christian-specific treatment
  • Active and inactive military member treatment
  • Gambling addiction treatment
  • Native American treatment
  • Trauma-focused treatment

Continuing care options: As a patient’s residential care comes to an end, their treatment team will work with them to create a thorough continuing care plan. This plan will include recommended outpatient services, such as individual therapy, medication management services, and other similar options. The staff members at our residential treatment centers are dedicated to helping departing patients reach their long-term goals.
