Understanding Behavioral Health
Mental health and behavioral health are broad terms that describe a wide range of conditions that can have profound impacts on an individual’s quality of life. Examples of mental health and behavioral health disorders that commonly develop during childhood or adolescence include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder. Mental and behavioral health disorders that might also develop at a younger age include depressive disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but symptoms of these disorders often develop during adulthood as well. Disorders that typically have an adulthood onset include bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
It is extremely difficult to express just how much mental health and behavioral health concerns can affect individuals and their families. Mental and behavioral health disorders affect all populations regardless of age, background, or socioeconomic status. The scope and impact of these disorders can vary widely from person to person due to several factors, including how old a person was when their symptoms started, whether the person has co-occurring disorders, how long their symptoms were present before they started treatment, and whether they are using drugs or alcohol. By receiving treatment for mental or behavioral health disorders, distressing symptoms can be alleviated, the frequency of symptoms may be reduced, and individuals will learn how to manage symptoms in their daily lives.
At Acadia Healthcare, we recognize the impact that mental and behavioral health disorders have, and we are well-versed in the various types and levels of treatment that have proven to be the most effective. At the treatment facilities within the Acadia Healthcare network, individuals and families whose lives have been affected by mental and behavioral health concerns can receive the comprehensive care that they need to enjoy the highest quality of life.
Why Consider Treatment for a Behavioral Health Disorder
The symptoms of mental and behavioral health disorders can be successfully managed through medication and therapeutic interventions. However, these disorders typically do not go away on their own and often get worse over time without treatment.
When a person lives with mental illness, it can have a devastating impact on all aspects of their life if they don’t seek treatment. Depending on the type of disorder a person has, they might not be able to develop healthy relationships, maintain employment, or succeed in school. They may also turn to the use of drugs or alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate and subsequently suffer from declining physical health.
The facilities in the Acadia Healthcare treatment network have helped countless people whose lives had been impacted by mental and behavioral health concerns. While each Acadia facility is unique, all of the facilities within our organization share the same commitment to providing comprehensive services that have been customized according to the specific strengths, needs, and goals of each person entrusted into their care. Regardless of which Acadia treatment facility an individual enters, they can expect to work in close collaboration with dedicated professionals who are skilled at employing a wide range of therapies and treatment techniques that provide the most focused care and best prepares them for continued success. At Acadia’s treatment facilities, the emphasis is not merely on alleviating symptoms, but on identifying and addressing the underlying issues and potential co-occurring disorders that have been preventing the individuals in treatment from living their best lives.
Levels of Care Offered Through Acadia Healthcare
People who heal at an Acadia Healthcare facility may benefit from a variety of treatment services that are offered at several levels. Some individuals may need to start with round-the-clock care in an inpatient or residential treatment environment and slowly progress through a series of step-down levels of care before they transition into community-based support services. Others may benefit from beginning their treatment process at the outpatient level. Depending on the results of a thorough assessment, an individual’s personalized care at an Acadia facility may feature one or several of the following elements:
Detoxification services: Many Acadia facilities offer medically monitored detox. This service allows individuals who have been struggling with substance use disorders to safely rid their bodies of alcohol or other drugs before fully engaging in treatment.
Inpatient treatment: Inpatient treatment is a short-term option that features intensive services to promote stabilization among individuals whose lives have been disrupted by acute symptoms of mental or behavioral health disorders.
Residential treatment: In addition to round-the-clock care, residential treatment for individuals who have developed mental or behavioral health disorders typically includes a variety of therapeutic interventions in a highly supportive environment.
Partial hospitalization program (PHP): PHP features care during the day. Participants return home or to an alternative residence when the PHP is not in session. Group therapy is often the main treatment method. Some PHPs also offer individual and family therapy.
Intensive outpatient program (IOP): Services at the IOP level are typically offered two to four days a week for two to three hours each day. IOPs provide flexible scheduling and therapeutic support to help individuals make a healthy transition out of treatment.
Traditional outpatient services: Several Acadia facilities also provide a variety of traditional outpatient services, such as individual, group, and family sessions. This level of care offers significant flexibility in terms of scheduling.
At Acadia Healthcare, experienced and compassionate professionals dedicate themselves to providing superior personalized care in an atmosphere of dignity and respect to individuals who have been struggling with one or more mental or behavioral health disorders. At Acadia treatment facilities, people can expect to work with experts who provide evidence-based, research-supported services that meet their specific needs and put them in the best position to experience long-term success.
